Dear ipw reader,
we are thrilled to announce that Petra Hanke will be the new managing director of ZELLCHEMING (the association of chemical pulp and paper chemists and engineers in Germany). She is a well known and well liked person in our community and we wish her well on this new and challenging endeavor. Ms. Hanke was responsible for ipw (as well as our other magazines Paperazzo and Druckspiegel) for many years, and we look forward to continuing a successful collaboration in the future. For more good news, such as the announcement from APP to end the clearing of natural forests across their entire supply chain in Indonesia, and some not-as-good news, please read more below. Simon Utsel awarded 2013 Alf de Ruvo scholarship
The 2013 Alf de Ruvo scholarship, worth SEK 500,000, has been awarded to Dr. Simon Utsel for his pioneering work on surface modification of cellulose-based materials. By modifying the surface properties of, or by adding new properties to, cellulose-based materials, these can be utilized more effectively in various products. › more |

On November 16, 2012, the Metso-supplied PM 1 fine paper machine at Zhanjiang Chenming Pulp & Paper Co., Ltd. in Zhanjiang City in China set a woodfree uncoated machine 24-hour world speed record of 1,808 m/min. During the record run, the 11.15-m-wide PM 1 produced woodfree uncoated printing paper at a basis weight of 70 g/m2. › more |

Spain: Waste act champions recycling "made in Europe"
Large retail outlets, banks, hotel chains, service companies, town councils … from now on all such entities are able to legally demand that their recyclable waste materials be finally recycled in Europe, according to the new Spanish Waste Act, which was passed on 29 November 2012. › more |

Intergraf takes on ERPC chairmanship
The European Recovered Paper Council (ERPC) is pleased to announce the appointment of Beatrice Klose as next chairperson. Ms Klose is the Secretary General of Intergraf - the European Association representing print and digital communications, one of the member organisations of the ERPC.
