Dear ipw reader,
once again, these days were dominated by announcements of substantial capacity reductions. UPM (that already reduced a total of approximately 850,000 t/y of graphic paper capacity in 2013) intends to permanently reduce its publication paper capacity in Europe by approximately another 800,000 t. This news is certainly hard to digest but according to CEO Jussi Pesonen the one and only alternative given unacceptably low operating rates. In contrast, Holmen is launching a new product in the SC segment in spring which will significantly reduce the company’s production of newsprint at the Braviken mill in Sweden. Holmen Paper judges that its own measures, combined with previously announced capacity closures elsewhere in the market, will considerably improve capacity utilization for newsprint in 2015. I will definitely keep my fingers crossed that this will prove true – in order to make sure that next year will become a year of better news! PS: I am about to leave for CEPI's European Paper Week in Brussels and am already looking forward to seeing you there! Sincerely, |
