Kemira expands its sodium chlorate production capacity in Joutseno, Finland
Kemira will invest approximately EUR 50-60 million in its Joutseno site in Finland to implement its growth strategy. Kemira is planning to build a completely new sodium chlorate production line and cell-room based on Kemira's in-house technology that will significantly increase Joutseno site's current sodium chlorate capacity. › more |

Hands-on Circular Economy An inspiring paper mill visit
The Dutch Presidency of the Council of the European Union organised a field trip for Industry and Environment Council working group members to illustrate the Circular Economy, one of the Presidency’s top priorities. The Presidency chose the state-of the-art paper mill in Roermond, The Netherlands. The mill is operated by Smurfit Kappa and its raw material is 100% recycled paper, making it the perfect example of circularity. › more |

Holmen to divest its newsprint mill in Spain
Holmen has signed an agreement to sell its newsprint mill in Madrid, Spain, including energy and recycled paper operations. The buyer, International Paper, will convert the mill into containerboard production. › more |

Biopac's coffee cups are 100% compostable
Biopac coffee cups are produced from certified sustainable board and unlike a conventional coffee cup (lined with a plastic film), Biopac’s cups are lined with a plant starch material to make the cup leakproof. Using a starch film, means that the cups are fully compostable in just 12 weeks and can be disposed of, along with food waste, via ‘In-Vessel’ composting. › more |

Sustainable and cost-efficient lignin-based concrete plasticiser
VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland has developed a technique that can be used to convert lignin – a by-product of pulp mills and biorefineries – into a concrete plasticiser that is competitive against the synthetic and lignosulphonate-based admixtures currently on the market. In its water-soluble form, lignin can also be used as an additive in paints, printing inks, coatings and manufacture of gypsum products. › more |
