Johan Björkenheim to join Metsäliitto Cooperative’s Board of Directors
The Supervisory Board of Metsä Group’s parent company, Metsäliitto Cooperative, elected forestry and agriculture entrepreneur Johan Björkenheim to be a new member of Metsäliitto Cooperative’s Board of Directors as of 1 January 2018. Björkenheim has a long time experience from forestry as well as from positions of trust in Metsäliitto Cooperative. He has been a member of the Representative Council during the years 1999–2011 and a member of the Supervisory Board as from 2011. › more |

Stora Enso to divest Puumerkki specialised wholesaler of wooden building materials
Stora Enso has divested 100% of its shares in the Finnish Puumerkki Oy and the Estonian Puumerkki AS to Mimir Invest AB, a global investment firm. Puumerkki is a specialised wholesaler of wooden building materials and was 100% owned by Stora Enso. › more |

Valmet will supply an automation system for Blue Paper
Valmet has been selected to supply a Valmet DNA Control System for the new Solid Recovered Fuels (SRF) boiler Blue Paper SAS is building in its site in Strasbourg, France. The order was included in Valmet's third quarter of 2017 orders received. The value of the order will not be disclosed. The delivery is scheduled for early 2018, and process start-up is planned for spring 2018. › more |

TAPPI Announces New Women in Industry Division
TAPPI has launched a new division to reflect the important and growing contributions of women professionals to TAPPI and the industry. The Women in Industry Division’s focus is to inspire and support the development of women in the pulp, paper, packaging, tissue, converting and associated forest products industries. Petra Einarsson appointed new CEO of BillerudKorsnäs
The Board of Directors of BillerudKorsnäs has appointed Petra Einarsson new President and CEO of the company. Petra succeeds Per Lindberg who is, after 12 successful years, leaving BillerudKorsnäs on his own request for a new assignment. Petra Einarsson will assume her new position at the turn of the year 2017-2018. › more |

Valmet has been recognized for its actions and strategy to mitigate climate change by CDP, the international not-for-profit organization that promotes sustainability. Stora Enso invests EUR 94 million to grow in renewable materials
Stora Enso will invest EUR 94 million to grow in renewable materials and to increase competitiveness in consumer board and biomaterials. EUR 52 million will be invested to increase the dissolving pulp production capacity at Enocell Mill and EUR 42 million to enhance the availability of the chemi-thermomechanical pulp (CTMP) at Imatra Mills. Prinzhorn Group strengthens its production hub in central Romania

VTT to develop new enzymes for biorefineries
Micro-organisms found in the wildfire-prone rainforests of India are an exciting prospect for biochemical production, as they are accustomed to the challenging conditions following a forest fire. The enzymes they produce are likely to also have a higher-than-normal resistance to the substances released from biomass in high-temperature industrial processes. An EU and nationally funded project led by VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, called IndZyme, is looking to study whether they are capable of breaking down agricultural waste better than commercial enzymes. › more |

VTT’s EUR 3 million investment accelerates the development of new kinds of fibre products
Cellulose and other fibres are future materials that can replace many plastic and mineral-based materials in the industrial sector. VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland has extended its research environment in Jyväskylä by introducing another pilot line to promote the development of porous materials, insulation products and nonwovens made from fibres by means of foam technology. › more |

UPM moves forward with the development of biochemicals business by evaluating the potential of building a biorefinery in the Chemical Park Frankfurt-Höchst in Germany. New textile fibres research from forest materials
The strategic innovation programme ”BioInnovation” has been granted its first strategic innovation project ,”Establish locally grown textiles in Sweden”, which will be project managed by Pernilla Walkenström at Swerea IVF. The project has a total budget of SEK 45,4 million. Companies, research institutes and universities are involved in the project, and during three years they will work together to create a sustainable production of new textile fibres from forest raw materials or recycled biobased textiles. › more |
