4evergreen: Successful Annual Conference 2024

On 6 November 2024, the 4evergreen Alliance held its Sponsors Council and 5th Annual Conference in Brussels, bringing together industry leaders, policymakers, and stakeholders to discuss the latest advancements and future goals for fibre-based packaging.

In her opening speech, Sarah Price, co-chair of the Alliance, reaffirmed the commitment to support the EU’s green transition and circular economy goals, aiming for a 90% recycling rate for fibre-based packaging by 2030. An introductory speech by Maja Desgrées du Lou from the European Commission emphasised the need for cooperation between industry and institutions to achieve these ambitious goals, focusing on connecting the value chain to perfect fibre-based packaging circularity.

Attendees also had the chance to join Breakout Sessions offered by our Workstream's Co-Leads Peter Hengesbach and Johannes Zipfel, Guillermo Valles, and Davide Braghiroli with Project Coordinator Charlotte Neumair, as well as from our Cross-Workstreams by Systemiq and Circular Analytics.

The second panel, moderated by Susan Brunner (Mondi) brought together leaders from various industry associations Matti Rantanen (European Paper Packaging Alliance), Annick Carpentier (The Alliance for Beverage Cartons and the Environment), Sévrine Pereira Teixeira (Europen), Graham Houlder (CEFLEX - A Circular Economy for Flexible Packaging) and Ulrich Leberle (Cepi). The focus of the discussion was highlighting the necessity of bringing legislators and value-chain representatives together to discuss common goals and future perspectives.

The conference showcased how the industry can work towards a competitive and sustainable Europe by turning guidance and best practices into action. Members presented their “Circularity Success Stories,” demonstrating the practical application of the Alliance’s toolkit. Highlights included Mondi’s fully recyclable, paper-based mailer made from renewable sources, Avery Dennison’s AD Circular program to recycle used paper and filmic label liners, and Sappi’s PaperPack Community, an online platform for professionals in the paper packaging industry to connect and collaborate on sustainable solutions.

A big thank you from the 4evergreen Alliance to all the speakers, moderators and guests for making this event possible!
